Ability to do the work of an Deactivation Furnace Operator (Explosive/Fork Lift Operator) without more than normal supervision. Must possess the ability to perform common tasks including destruction of a variety of explosives and ammunition using detonation and burning methods and procedures, monitor equipment operation, gauges and panel lights to detect deviations from standards and identify and handle ammunition and explosives, and recognize deteriorated, damaged or unserviceable ammunition, explosives, or ammunition components. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Deactivation Furnace Operator works on hard surfaces in operations requiring walking, bending, reaching, and long periods of standing; occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 40 pounds. Explosives Operator work involves lifting and carrying items weighing up to 40 pounds; and working on production lines at rhythmic pace for extended periods, including standing, reaching, bending, stooping, and manipulating parts and using machines and hand tools. During fork lift operation, physical effort is required in braking and steering, manipulation of clutch, shift, lifting and tilting mechanisms. All lifts over 50 pounds will be assisted with a two person lift or using a mechanical handling equipment lifting device. The two person lift limit is 100 pounds and will only be used for single event, non-routine lifts. WORKING CONDITIONS:
Deactivation Furnace Operator works in close proximity to munitions containing explosives; is exposed to prevailing weather conditions; and works with equipment which generates heat sometimes up to 1600 degrees Fahrenheit. Subject to assignment to either of two shifts on a regular or rotating basis. Explosives Operator work is performed on the demolition range and outside on ramps and storage areas when weather is often inclement. There are assignments where dirt, grease, noise, and odors are often disagreeable. Deactivation Furnace Operator/Explosives Operator is required to wear protective clothing that is specially made and treated for working on explosives, including safety shoes, glasses, gas masks, and coveralls. There is a chance of injuries ranging from loss of life to burns, cuts, bruises, sprains, and nausea.
